Sporting CP may lose Maxi Araújo to Chelsea, who are looking to replace Marc Cucurella. The London club has agreed to sell Cucurella to Real Madrid for an initial fee of £47.5m, with the Spaniard set to sign a six-year deal with the La Liga side after the World Cup. Cucurella's exit leaves Chelsea in search of a wing-back to feature in Xabi Alonso's preferred system, with Araújo on the radar. The Uruguayan has a release clause of €80m, but may be sold for €50m. Araújo scored five goals and created four more in the Primeira Liga for Sporting last season, featuring in a variety of roles down the left. Journalist Si Phillips claims Chelsea are considering him as an option. Araújo is currently with the Uruguay squad at the World Cup, where the South Americans face Saudi Arabia this evening. Chelsea are confident that a €50m fee will be enough to sign the Sporting wing-back. Araújo is 26 years old and has been an important player for Sporting last season. The transfer fee is expected to be around €50m, which is lower than his release clause. Araújo's potential move to Chelsea could be a significant loss for Sporting CP.
